As sports fans, we get an absolute high from watching our heroes achieve the impossible. Personally, I look at them and feel inspired to follow in their examples. So here’s my list of how the former Lakers Super Star inspired me.
Number.1. Health and fitness
Kobe Bryant would wake up at 3 in the morning to exercise and understood that as an athlete it was his job to be fit and healthy. I think a lot of us neglect our bodies and fail to realize that if we don’t take care ourselves, we won’t be able to do what we love. I want to be the best version of myself and sure, waking up at 3 am might not be for everyone but I can exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week.
Number 2. Sacrifice
Kobe was a family man. And he had great relationships with other athletes but he was not doing what the others did. Instead of vacations and going out, Kobe chose to sacrifice a lot of the glamorous Instagram type activities and focused on his craft. I think today, his example of having a great work ethic and making those sacrifices is so important in age of FOMO. As much as enjoying life is important, I don’t want to have any regrets related to my career and things I wanted to achieve. I can skip a night of drinking in order to follow my passions. Kobe said that one needs to be an obsessive – an obsessive who will do things that they’re not sure they can do in order to reach another level.
Number 3. Use logic
There’s this interview where Kobe spoke about looking at failures for what they are, the cause and the remedy. The only way to properly analyze those failures is to get over self-first. Stop caring about what people say and think, realize that you had a bad game and find the solution. Sometimes it means changing tactics, adapting, know your flaws- you can’t increase your speed? Perhaps you can improve on technique. We can apply this principle to our own lives by seeing things for what they are and finding a way to overcome by assessing what we have at our disposal. A game plan to be the best.
