The fight against racial discrimination has once again come into the spotlight following the death of George Floyd. Many stars have supported the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement however, Lewis Hamilton aired his discontent as prominent Formula 1 figures have remained silent on the issue.
The six-time champion is one of two drivers of colour on the Formula 1 grid. Hamilton pointed out on social media that he is part of a “white dominated sport” and thus, expected his F1 community to be more vocal about the injustice which has taken place in America and affected marginalized groups all over the world. The Brit continued to explain that he is not in favour of looting or acts of violence but stands behind peaceful protesting in order to bring an end to racism. Hamilton stated very strongly on Instagram that he is aware of those in his sport who have not spoken out during this time and believes that those who have a status and influence should use their platforms to bring about awareness.
There has been a reaction to Hamilton’s post on social media. Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo has since voiced his support for the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and has said, “Racism is toxic and needs to be addressed not with violence or silence but with unity and action.”
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc responded by first acknowledging that he was uncomfortable sharing his thoughts on social media and that he was “completely wrong” for staying silent regarding racism. He also urged those that follow him on Instagram to spread awareness adding that, “It is our responsibilities to speak out against injustice. Don’t remain silent”.
